Universal Audio has officially disrupted the entry-level plugin market by making eight of its most sought-after processors and the LUNA DAW completely free for all macOS and Windows users, with no hardware purchase necessary.

Quick Take

  • The “UAD Explore FREE” bundle includes eight native plugins previously sold as premium licenses.

  • Included processors: 1176 Classic FET Compressor, Teletronix LA-2A Leveler, UA 610 Tube Preamp & EQ, and more.

  • No UA hardware (Apollo or Satellite) is required to run these native versions on host CPUs.

  • The package includes LUNA, UA’s proprietary DAW environment with integrated analog console modeling.

  • Registration requires a UA account and installation via the UA Connect management application.

Universal Audio is pivotally shifting its business model toward native software accessibility.

The UAD Explore FREE bundle represents the company’s first permanent “freemium” entry point for producers who do not own Apollo hardware.

The bundle is centered around the “Holy Trinity” of dynamics: the 1176 FET Compressor, the Teletronix LA-2A, and the UA 610 Tube Preamp. These emulations use the same high-fidelity DSP code as the premium UAD-2 versions, but they run natively on host CPUs (Intel, AMD, and Apple Silicon).

The bundle also rounds out a full production chain with the Century Tube Channel Strip, Pure Plate Reverb, and the PolyMAX polyphonic synthesizer.

For guitarists, UA has included the Showtime ’64 Tube Amp, modeled after a high-headroom vintage Fender Showman.

By bundling these with LUNA, UA is providing a complete “analog-in-the-box” workstation. This move follows a series of temporary giveaways, suggesting the company is aggressively targeting new producers who have historically been priced out of the UAD ecosystem

My Thoughts

Universal Audio just changed the ‘best free plugins’ conversation. For years, you had to spend $1,000 on an interface just to get a taste of their 1176 or LA-2A emulations.

Giving them away permanently is a brilliant strategy. While this bundle is a perfect starting point for your mix, once you’re ready to polish your final track, you should definitely check out our guide on the best UAD plugins for mastering to see how their premium line handles the master bus.
