Neural DSP Unveils Darkglass Ultimate: The Complete Bass Signal Chain

Neural DSP Unveils Darkglass Ultimate

Neural DSP has officially unveiled the Darkglass Ultimate plugin, a fully featured digital platform designed to provide studio-quality bass tones through an expanded signal chain and enhanced cabinet modeling.

Quick Take

  • Expands upon the original Darkglass Ultra plugin with added effects, cabinets, and total signal chain control.

  • Free update for existing users of the Darkglass Ultra dual-preamp plugin.

  • Features a comprehensive suite of digital bass effects tailored for modern aggressive and clean tones.

  • Integrated cabinet simulation engine with multiple microphone positions and room acoustics.

  • Optimized for low-latency performance in both live tracking and mix-down scenarios.

Darkglass Ultimate represents the next evolution of Neural DSP’s partnership with the iconic bass hardware brand. While previous versions focused primarily on the Microtubes B7K and Vintage Ultra preamps, the Ultimate edition introduces a full array of processing tools. This includes dedicated compression, modulation, and time-based effects that are tuned specifically for the low-frequency requirements of bass guitars. The technical overhaul focuses on the “signal chain” philosophy. Users can now move beyond simple preamp settings to sculpt an entire virtual rig. The new cabinet section utilizes high-resolution impulse responses and allows for microscopic adjustments to microphone placement. This ensures that the bass sits perfectly in a dense mix without requiring an array of third-party plugins. The update also improves the underlying algorithm for better CPU efficiency on modern multi-core processors.

My Take

Neural DSP is the gold standard for high-gain tones, and seeing them expand the Darkglass suite into a full “Ultimate” platform is exactly what bass players needed.

Most bass plugins focus on one specific pedal, but this gives you the whole rack. The fact that it is a free update for existing owners shows a lot of respect for their user base.

If you need that “clanky” modern metal bass or a warm, vintage studio sound, this is likely the only bass plugin you will need to open.
