Modular manufacturer Intellijel has announced Swells, an advanced stereo reverb module for Eurorack that offers 9 different models and deep modulation capabilities.
Quick Take
Swells includes 9 distinct reverb models ranging from realistic rooms to atmospheric textures like “Asterion” and “Deadspace”.
The module features a Swell Generator that creates control voltage from incoming audio.
A built-in Lo-Fi function adds specific digital degradation to each model.
The internal audio resolution operates at 32-bit float and 96kHz.
The retail price is set at $499.
Following the success of the Sealegs delay module, Intellijel is applying a similar design philosophy to reverb.
Swells provides direct manual control over key parameters like pre-delay, size, and damping via physical sliders.
The standout feature is the Swell Generator. This is a multi-mode envelope follower that translates incoming audio into a modulation signal.
This allows the reverb to react dynamically to playing intensity. Users can even patch this control voltage out to other modules in their system.
Swells features additional processors to spice up the reverb tails. “Freeze” captures a slice of audio for infinite sustain. “Reverse” flips the audio playback from the pre-delay. “Burst” can trigger a surge of noise or pre-delay feedback.
All of these parameters respond smoothly to internal and external modulation. The module is clearly aimed at producers looking to mangle their effects rhythmically.
My Thoughts
I have not had the chance to rack this module up in the studio yet, but my first impression based on the demo video is highly positive.
The Eurorack community is already going crazy over it online. Many ambient producers are planning to pair this directly with their Sealegs delay or Multigrain sampler to create massive soundscapes.
Modular reverb is tricky because most of them just sound like a standard VST plugin stuffed into a hardware case.
What Intellijel did here turns the reverb into an actual dynamic instrument rather than just an end-of-chain effect. Being able to patch control voltage into every slider, combined with the Lo-Fi mode, makes this a top contender for any ambient rack.
