Swedish instrument manufacturer Elektron has officially been acquired by Bonnier Capital, a family-owned Swedish investment firm, bringing new financial backing to the creators of the Octatrack and Digitakt.

Quick Take

  • Bonnier Capital is the new majority owner of the Elektron brand.
  • The original team is staying put and everything is running as usual.
  • This new funding is meant to push future hardware projects forward.

The financial numbers remain undisclosed, but Bonnier Capital acquired a majority stake from a consortium led by EMM Intressenter AB.

This move is highly notable because it marks Bonnier’s first entry into the electronic music instrument sector.

Despite the ownership change, Elektron will continue to operate independently. The company will keep its main headquarters in Gothenburg, along with its subsidiaries in Los Angeles and Berlin. For customers and partners, day-to-day operations and product development will remain completely unchanged.

Bonnier Capital appears aware of how protective the synth community is regarding boutique brands. Investment Director Jonas Von Hedenberg stated their goal is to support growth while “preserving the unique identity that has made it so respected by artists worldwide.

Elektron CEO Alexander Hellström addressed the community with a similar message.

Joining Bonnier marks an exciting new chapter for Elektron,” Hellström stated. “It gives us the support and strategic backing to keep doing what we love most – creating inspiring instruments and pushing the boundaries of sound and performance.

To ensure continuity of leadership, Hellström, founder Jonas Hillman, and the broader management team are actively reinvesting in the company alongside the new owners.

My Take

Let’s be real. Producers always get nervous when big investment firms buy independent gear companies.

We have all seen brands lose their edge when profit margins become the only priority. Look at the shifts in the industry with brands like Native Instruments or Moog. Large investments require large returns. That usually means pushing for mass-market appeal over niche innovation.

However, Elektron has been quiet regarding flagship hardware for a while. This cash injection could be exactly what they need to build an Octatrack successor.

I want to bet on independent companies delivering better value, but I am keeping an open mind. Let’s hope Bonnier Capital respects the unique Elektron workflow and does not water down the brand.
